As the Carter family prepares to move from Virginia to Idaho, Wiggie's imagination takes a new direction. He has only recently overcome the delusion that he is the reincarnation of the cat that belonged to the famous composer Beethoven. Now, as the Carter family and their pets move across country he is convinced that his forebears were among the early pioneers. While the Carter's other pets, Winston, Josh and Gwenny look forward to an uneventful cross-country trip, Wiggie is convinced that the Wild West is as rugged and wild as ever, full of bloodthirsty Indians and dangerous outlaws. Although reality turns out to be quite different, Wiggie is involved in one hilarious adventure after another. He finally reaps his reward when he takes the law into his own paws and ends up as a real-life hero
