En 1895 se publica "Flor de Mayo", segunda novela del escritor valenciano Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, escrita originalmente como folletín para el diario republicano El Pueblo, fundado por el propio Blasco. En "Flor de Mayo", Blasco nos traslada a su barrio natal, El Cabanyal, pequeño barrio de pescadores que abastecía de pescado a toda la ciudad de Valencia, a costa, en muchas ocasiones, de la vida de algunos pescadores; una vida que él conoció personalmente.
