Sófocles (495 a.C.- 406 a.C.) Poeta trágico griego. Se dio a conocer como autor trágico al vencer a Esquilo en el concurso teatral que se celebraba anualmente en Atenas durante las fiestas dionisíacas. Comenzó así una carrera literaria sin parangón. Se sitúa, junto con Esquilo y Eurípides, entre las figuras más destacadas de la tragedia griega. De toda su producción literaria sólo se conservan siete tragedias completas que son de importancia capital para el género.
