GASTON LEROUX (1868-1927) est né à Paris, mais il grandit en Normandie et c´est au lycée de Caen qu´il obtiendra son baccalauréat de lettres. Ensuite il revient à Paris pour devenir avocat en 1890, métier qu´il exercera pendant trois ans, tout en rédigeant des comptes rendus de procès pour « L´Écho de Paris », puis au « Matin ». Dans le premier il publia avec grand succès « Le mystère de la chambre jaune ». Lorsque paraissent en 1909 les premiers épisodes du « Fantôme de l’Opéra » dans les colonnes du quotidien « Le Gaulois », Gaston Leroux est déjà en pleine gloire littéraire. Son personnage Joseph Rouletabille, jeune apprenti reporter à l'intelligence déductive hors du commun, qui apparaît pour la première fois dans « Le Mystère de la chambre jaune », devient le héros d'autres romans tels que « Le Parfum de la dame en noir », « Rouletabille chez le Tsar » et « Le Crime de Rouletabille ». En bon journaliste, lorsqu’il écrit « Le Fantôme de l’Opéra », il sait un élément méconnu de la plupart des parisiens : une rivière souterraine traverse la capitale, la Grange Batelière, qui a causé bien du souci aux constructeurs du métropolitain et qui passe non loin de l’Opéra Garnier, dans le IXe arrondissement, un monument envoutant qui peut cacher une mine de mystère.

Gaston Leroux was a French journalist, short-story writer, and novelist, and is most famous for his acclaimed novel, The Phantom of the Opera. A student of law, Leroux turned to journalism after spending his inheritance on a lavish lifestyle. Over a decade of work as a court reporter and theatre critic for the L ?cho de Paris served as inspiration for his series of successful detective novels featuring Joseph Rouletabille, an amateur sleuth, and Leroux s contributions to the French detective genre are considered as significant as those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Leroux died in 1927.
