The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing s popular Images of America series is Lackawanna from local authors Gerald L. Halligan and John Koerner. The book boasts more than 200 vintage photographs and memories of days gone by.
Known locally as Limestone Hill and later called the "Steel Plant District," Lackawanna, NY, was formed from the westernmost part of the town of West Seneca in 1909. The new city derived its name from the Lackawanna Steel Company that had moved from Scranton, PA, at the beginning of the 20th century.
An industrial future would burn brightly for several decades, and charitable institutions begun by the Roman Catholic Church prospered under the guidance of a humble man known as "the Padre of the Poor," Rev. Nelson H. Baker. His work outlasted the great steel-making plant, but both charity and industry would make the "Steel City" known worldwide. The term "melting pot" characterized Lackawanna, for its steel industry lured a tremendous workforce composed of various nationalities, ethnic groups, races, and creeds, all striving for the American Dream.
Highlights of Lackwanna:
The collections of images were generously donated by both private families and local institutions.
The photograph of the July 15, 1915 Independence Day Celebration with Father Nelson Baker standing among city officials is symbolic of Lackawanna as a City of Faith and Steel .
The image of St. Barbara s Church was one of the last submitted for the book in December 2010 and in an ironic twist, the church no longer exists, having been demolished in March 2011.
Lackawanna City School District s donated images of school services provided for children affected by the polio epidemics, which was progressive and unique for a city of its size.
