9781531646219: Pinole

Synopsis

Pinole began as the cornerstone of a massive land grant nearly 200 years ago and grew to become an economic center of early Contra Costa County. Today it is a diverse and public-spirited small city with a high regard for, and interest in, its heritage. Pinole was named for the gruel (penole or pinolli) made from seeds, grain, and acorns given by welcoming Native Americans to explorers in the Pedro Fages expedition in 1772. Pinole's rich commercial and farming history--made possible by its access to San Pablo Bay and by the convergence of two railroads that ran through the heart of the community--is chronicled here with numerous photographs from the latter part of the 19th century through 2009, recalling buildings, people, and events that still live in the hearts of the city's modern-day residents.

Title: Pinole Photo Book Nearing Completion
Author: Staff Writer
Publisher: Pinole Historical Society Newsbriefs
Date: Winter 2009

Work on the long-awaited book on Pinole -- the latest in the award-winning Images of America series of city books published by Arcadia Publishing -- is nearing completion. Work began last April. The 127-page book will be submitted to the publisher by the February 10 deadline. The book will contain approximately 200 photos of Pinole, dating all the way back to the 1850s, and will cover Pinole's history through 2009.

The Pinole Historical Society plans to host a book launching event. The date will be announced as soon as the PHS hears from the publisher when delivery of the books is
expected.

We'll have a pre-publication order form in the Spring 2009 issue of this newsletter, which will be distributed in May.

About the Author

The Pinole Historical Society has gathered images of a city that once was, and still is, thriving and looking to the future, while intent on preserving its past. The book pays tribute to many of the prominent families of Pinoleas history, including Martinez, Fernandez, Tennent, Downer, and Faria, with photographs donated by many of their descendants and other longtime Pinole residents.

George Vincent, right, is a third-generation Pinolean whose growing-up playground was early Pinole. He co-founded the Pinole Historical Society to preserve the community's unique past. An advocate of local history, his books include Yesterday's Child, the biography of Ramona Martinez, an early Pinole resident. A career teacher, he holds a Masters degree in American history.

Jeff Rubin, owns a newsletter-publishing firm called The Newsletter Guy. He is a former newspaper reporter and editor. His freelance articles have appeared in Runner s World, Track & Field News, Family Weekly, and other publications. He and George Vincent co-authored the book Pinole in the Arcadia Publishing Images of America series. Jeff is president of the Pinole Historical Society.
