Sir: I have the honor to forward herewith the report of the board of medical ofiicers convened per Special Orders, No. 194, Adjutant General's Office, August 18, 1898. In submitting this report, which gives the results of the board's investigation into the cause and WM typhoid fever in the various military camps within the limits of the United States, I desire to bear witness to the unremitting labors of the volunteer members of the board, Majs. Vic tor C. Vaughan and Edward 0. Shakespeare. Although honorably discharged from the service of the United States on June 30, 1899, at a time when this report was far from being completed, these gentle men voluntarily continued to give their services to the Government, to the entire exclusion of their private interests; the former until January 31, 1900, and the latter until the day of his death, June 1, 1900. Whatever scientific value, therefore, the report of this board may possess, must be largely credited to the untiring efiorts of its volunteer members. I desire also to call attention to the invaluable assistance rendered the board during the past two years, in the prep aration of tables, charts, etc., by Mr. C. J. Myers, chief clerk, Army Medical Museum.
