Excerpt from Revue des Deux Mondes, 1908, Vol. 47: LXXVIII Année, Cinquième Période

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This illuminating book, an indispensable resource for scholars of 18th-century literature, presents a fascinating collection of 48 previously unpublished letters by renowned philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Rousseau's thought inspired the ideological foundations of the French Revolution, and his writings continue to be celebrated by students of philosophy and political science. Spanning the last twelve years of Rousseau's life, this collection includes letters to friends and family in Lyon, as well as to patrons such as the Prince de Conti. They afford a glimpse into his personal life and his complex relationships, while also providing significant insights into Rousseau's philosophical development. The letters reveal Rousseau's struggles with mental health, his experiences living in various locations in exile, and his persistent battles with detractors who endeavored to silence him. Despite these challenges, they also disclose his enduring affection for his friends and his deep commitment to his work. Students and scholars will find this volume an invaluable addition to Rousseau scholarship, providing rich material for studies of Rousseau's personal and intellectual life.
