Where is the rub? Why is it that persons of wide reading, of close application to studies, of ready wit, of trained thought and Speech, will attach undue importance to their attainments? Why should the labored wisdom of the text books of their college days crop out in their public utterances, in the productions of their pen, in their letters, in their conversation? Why should they like the newly apprenticed mechanic be continually oiling and polishing their hammers and saws, and, while they admiringly exhibit their new tools, forget to apply them to any useful pur pose? Why should high culture and great learning, in so many cases, lie like an incubus on him who possesses them and on those with whom his lot is cast? Happily, this need not be so, as an object lesson may serve to Show.
