Bother parts The difl'erence then between the amount of commercial transactions executed by these two countries is very great; and as England on'oya the advantage of priority in commercial existence, and as s e is able to oppose improvement to improvement, it will require a very long time before America shall be able to enter into efl'ective competition with her. The superiority of the United States is recognised only in the Antilles, or Caribbee Islands. There~the American merchant rules supreme, and has the decided pre-eminence over all other producers, for he is able to furnish the provisions which those islanders are interested in taking directly from America: but the moment the question turns on the objects of industry, that is, when it is considered whence manufactures should be purchased, the superiority of England is instantly asserted and here, as elsewhere, the ready and involuntary tribute is paid to the surpassing excellence of her looms, and the productions of the genius of her people.
