In the days when King Uth'er Pen-drag'on ruled over Britain, and when he had grown Old, a baby boy was born to him and his queen I'graine. Now the King was stricken of a fatal sickness and the babe was taken by Mer'lin, the King's chief adviser, and placed under the care of Sir Ec'tor, one of the noblest and most faith ful of the King's subjects. The child was christened 'arthur.
Not long after this, King Uther died, so that Arthur grew up not knowing that he was of royal birth, but believing Sir Ector to be his real father.
As time went on, there grew up great confusion in the realm, for the lords made themselves strong and warred against each other, each hoping to become king.
