C'est en 1615 que le chevalier Marin vint s'établir à Paris, où il demeura jusqu'en automne 1628. Napolitain de naissance, courtisan tour a tour fêté et disgracié à Rome, à Venise, à Ra venne, à Turin, il se présentait a la cour de Marie de Médicis, et aussi à l'hôtel de Rambouillet, avec la réputation d'un bel esprit, d'un poète accompli. L'italie était a la mode; Marino connut bientôt tout le monde lettré; il fit même des disciples, entre autres saint-amant. Il avait en portefeuille un poème épique, Adone, commencé dès avant 1605 et qui ne comprenait 'a l'origine que trois chants: l'innamoramento de Vénus et Adonis; leurs amours et plaisirs; la chasse où Adonis trouva la mort. Cette forme primitive fut enrichie.peu a peu d'épisodes et de développements innombrables; le récit lui - même finit par s'évanouir dans cette débauche d'imagination, de même qu'un arbre disparaît parfois sous le lierre et meurt étouffé par sa trop riche parure. L'adone dans sa forme définitive compte plus de 5000 huitains, distribués en vingt chants.
