Ce n'est pas une histoire de l'art allemand que nous avons l'intention decrire en ce moment, mais une simple étude, cri tique, sur un certain nombre de monuments qui méritent à notre avis, de nouvelles recherches. Certains historiens de l'art avaient daté sur la foi des chroniques, il y a déjà de longues années, des oeuvres importantes que possédaient les cités germaniques, et les nouveaux archéologues ont accepté sans les soumettre à une nouvelle analyse cette datation trop reculée. De là des erreurs graves, de là aussi l'impossibilité d'écrire la marche. Progressive de l'art allemand. De là enfin la nécessité de soumettre ces oeuvres à un nouvel examen, à une analyse plus détaillée et moins sommaire.
