9781522933144: Last Gasp (DCI Jamie Carver)

Synopsis

The last time DCI Jamie Carver let a would be victim act as bait for a serial-killer, it ended badly - very badly. Now they want him to do it again, only this time the ‘victim’ is a Dominatrix... As if he hasn’t got enough on his plate...-A brutal killer, poised to strike again any time-Shadows of the past that still haunt his dreams-An investigation under mounting pressure to succeed-A beautiful woman whose bizarre lifestyle may hold the key to finding the killerNo wonder Carver feels exposed – and that’s not counting the young girl whose life he’s trying to save from ruin, or the ambitious colleague scheming to bring him down.As the kill-count mounts, signs emerge that seem to point to a link between the ‘Worshipper Killings’, and Carver’s last, ‘big case’. And when the killer strikes at the heart of the investigation, Carver knows that in order to protect those closest to him, he must confront what he most fears – his own failings.Written by someone with first-hand experience of running a murder investigation, LAST GASP is a suspense-filled novel of intrigue, danger - and human weakness. It is a story about one man’s struggle to put the past behind him, and protect those he loves. What readers are saying:"’... an absolute treat for crime fiction lovers. This debut thriller, from the very beginning is so compelling you are unable to put this book down, you cannot help keep turning the pages""An excellent crime thriller with an intriguing plot and well drawn characters""Last Gasp has the magic ingredient - you just have to keep turning the page to see what happens next"

About the Author

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of the Northwest's grittiest towns and cities. He likes to write stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they often are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). As a police officer, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens. As both a former Senior Investigating Officer and a Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his extensive experience, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as in any modern crime fiction. He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his UK novels.
