Madeline Macneil's own dulcimer journey began more than thirty years ago. Actually, the adventures first began when, in her mid-twenties, she decided that life as a folksinger would be more exciting than her profession as a high school educator! Maddie s guitar and her collection of LPs by Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Peter, Paul and Mary accompanied her on the road as far away as Virginia s Shenandoah National Park (40 miles). She spent six years performing at Skyland Lodge in the Park where the beautiful traditions of Appalachian music and the discovery of the dulcimer led to performances and festivals throughout the United States, numerous recordings and writing for Mel Bay Publications. Part of this adventure has included a continuing fastination with the technical and mathematical aspects of music and how they meld with the played and sung stories that enrich our lives. The journey is never alone. Maddie is grateful to friends who have shared their questions, their insight and their help. Her thanks go to Robert Barnes, Ralph Lee Smith, Mike and Carol Lesley, Judy and Bob Bailey, Sheryl and Bill Bragwell, Janita Baker, Michael DeLalla, Betty Berry, Colin and Peggy Kelly, Ellen Morgan, Scott Jenkins, Chris Barb, John Burns and Mike Sprenger.
