Émile ZOLA (1840-1902), né à Paris, de père italien, un ingénieur de travaux publics, et mère française. À conséquence du décès du chef de famille, l´orphelin, fils unique, et la veuve, connaissent des graves pénuries économiques, jusqu´à ce que le jeune Émile entre en contact avec Louis Hachette, qui l'embauche comme commis dans sa librairie le 1er mars 1862. Il considère dès son plus jeune âge l'écriture comme sa véritable vocation. Ses amis d'enfance Paul Cézanne et Jean-Baptistin Baille sont ses premiers lecteurs. Zola est considéré le chef de files de l´école naturaliste française. Il avait été influencé par les théories contemporaines de l´hérédité et la science expérimentale. Le premier volume, « La Fortune des Rougon », de son œuvre principale, « Les Rougon-Macquart », est présentée comme une « histoire naturelle et social d´une famille sous les Second Empire ». Le résultat est un panorama du style de vie français, particulièrement de la classe moyenne et ouvrière, pendant le XIXe siècle, fait avec une documentation rigoureuse et systématique et focalisé sur le vice, la misère, les instincts et les appétits humains. « Thérèse Raquin » (1867). Il s´agit du premier roman de Zola dans lequel apparait d´une manière définie la tendance naturaliste. Il s´agit de l´histoire d´un adultère, conséquence d´un mariage hâtif, mais aussi de l´ennui et des aspirations démesurées de Thérèse, et qui va finir en assassinat du mari, devenu gênant. À partir de là, les remords prendront une dimension inattendue.

About the Author:

?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.
