Synopsis

'Bali Billy' is the first in a three-part series about a middle-aged Australian couple, Bill and Claire, who retire early and run away from home to escape their over-dependent adult children still living with them. They move to Bali, where they first met 35 years ago, to open a guesthouse and fulfil dreams they had before mortgages, jobs and kids: Claire writes a book about their adventures and teaches English, and Bill ends up buying and running a local newspaper, The Islander. While investigating corruption of the local Police Chief, the Australian Prime Minister and local hotel developers, Bill wins awards and makes enemies. While buying their guesthouse, they inherit the Maid called Made but receive no guests. And meanwhile, their son becomes an Internet sensation as he searches for Bill and Claire in Mali, among other places. This quirky comedy-drama is based in my favourite part of the world and includes a variety of whacky Balinese characters. As an author of guidebooks to Bali published by Lonely Planet and Tuttle, and of a novel also based there called 'Bali & Oates', I have used all my knowledge and experience to create a fun and light-hearted, but sometimes thought-provoking, account of an Australian baby-boomer couple struggling in Paradise.
