It is 1139 and the Empress Maud has landed in England in a bid to reclaim her throne from her cousin Stephen. Lord David Ravenscroft is a close advisor to King Stephen and while he is at court, planning a strategy to defeat Maud's armies, the King's soldiers, searching David's house for Maud and her followers, find a naked man in the bed of his wife, Catherine. Heartbroken, David confronts her and she admits her guilt. David leaves, expecting never to return, but three years later she writes to tell him she is dying and needs to see him. She wants to tell him the truth about the man found in her bed and about the daughter David always assumed was fathered by that man. This is a tale of one woman's sacrifice to keep the two men she loves safe from harm during a civil war which tore the country apart.
