Geboren am 24.10.1763 in Berlin; gestorben am 03.08.1839 in Frankfurt. Brendel Mendelssohn war die zweite Tochter von Moses Mendelssohn . 14jährig wurde sie mit dem Kaufmann Simon Veit verlobt, den sie 1783 heiratete. Im Salon ihrer Freundin Henriette Herz lernte sie im Juli 1797 Friedrich Schlegel kennen. Sie ließ sich am 11. Januar 1799 scheiden. Nach ihrer Scheidung im Jahr 1799 lebte sie mit Friedrich Schlegel zusammen. Sie zog mit ihm, seinem Bruder August Wilhelm Schlegel und dessen Frau Caroline nach Jena, wo sich mit Novalis, Tieck und Schelling ein Zentrum der literarischen Romantik etablierte. 1804 heiratete sie Friedrich Schlegel.
