Louis Marie Anne Couperus wurde am 10. Juni 1863 in Den Haag geboren und starb am 16. Juli 1923 in De Steeg. Er war ein niederländischer Autor. Er verbrachte den Großteil seines Lebens im Ausland; als Kind ging er mit seinen Eltern nach Batavia in die damaligen Kolonie Niederländisch-Indien (Indonesien), wo sein Vater als Jurist tätig war. Auch als als Erwachsener unternahm er ausgedehnte Reisen nach Skandinavien, England, Deutschland, Frankreich, Spanien, Niederländisch-Indien, Japan, vor allem nach Italien. Von 1915 bis zu seinem Tod wenige Wochen nach seinem 60. Geburtstag im Jahr 1923 lebte er in Den Haag. Er schrieb eine große Reihe von Romanen und kürzeren Werken.
