About the Author:

Darlene grew up in the hills of southern Kentucky, near the shores of the Cumberland River. She writes about the places of her childhood, because they burn into her soul and shape her identity. That land is like the ghost of a childhood melody, playing inside a woman all her life, a place one can never get out of their system. Darlene has a Master's Degree in Education and is a teacher in rural Appalachia. Her poetry about life in Southern Appalachia has appeared in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies. Darlene makes it a point to donate all proceeds from her poetry to fighting Mountain Top Removal, so she suppose that in some small way she is an activist. Darlene is also a visual artist, specializing in murals. She lives in South-Central Kentucky with her husband, Phillip, eight rescued cats and a dog named Rocky. She enjoys gardening, long walks, good books, summertime and Mexican food.
