Brought to life here in 48 pages of full colour drawings, Les Misérables - translated variously from French as The Miserable Ones, The Wretched, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims - (1862) is a novel by French author Victor Hugo, and among the best-known novels of the 19th century. It has been described as one of the greatest novels ever written in any language. It follows the lives of several characters over a twenty-year period in the early 19th century, starting in the year of Napoleon's final defeat. The novel principally focuses on the struggles of the main character, ex-convict Jean Valjean, as he seeks to redeem himself from his past mistakes. It also provides social commentary by examining the impact of Valjean's actions: and it examines the nature of good, evil, and the law, in a sweeping story that covers the history of France, the architecture of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables is also known to many through its numerous stage and screen adaptations, of which the most famous is the stage musical of the same name, sometimes abbreviated "Les Mis" or "Les Miz" The story could be considered historical 'faction' because it contains factual, historic events, including the Paris Uprising of 1832.

Review:
"I would certainly recommend any parent hoping to inspire an interest in the "classics" of literature to consider exposing their children to this excellent version of the story."

"Certainly the art is striking. The cover is simply superb, and Cameron's Tripods are a masterpiece of design"
John Gosling - writer -- John Gosling - writer John Gosling - writer (About WOTW - Classics Illustrated)

"My son Jack didn't like English at high school so I bought him a lot of comic versions of classic books such as Jekyll And Hyde, Kidnapped and Macbeth - now he wants to go to see the Shakespeare play.
"It's a great way to get people to read. The problem is that there just aren't enough comics out there any more."
Ian Rankin - author -- Ian Rankin - author

Classics Illustrated taught me the value of good stories that I otherwise would not have read at all. As an adult, I am much more mindful of authorship and questions about the integrity of the text, issues that children don't care about. But then, children are more ruthless about what they consider entertaining. They don't love books because they think they should. They love stories that deliver, and Classics Illustrated always had the goods. Looks like it still does. -- newsweek 2009

Comics are a culture all by themselves. No other medium is capable of combining so much in one hit. To anyone who never had the fortune to lose themselves in a graphic novel, they really are missing out on a gem. To the uninitiated, those seemingly static picture boxes appear as lifeless drawings. Make no mistake, in the way your imagination takes hold when reading a story. Your entire being gets drawn in when reading a graphic novel.
-- Graphic novels review - comic classics, Feb 2009

This was part of the fun of reading comics for me as a kid, to find a new word and then research to see if there was actually a real meaning behind the word, by doing this process, it increased my vocabulary and also aided me in learning how to research information.

This is just one example of how comics added to my education, and after many years it seems that teachers, and schools, and even libraries are beginning to see the benefits of using comics and graphic novels as an additional teaching tool.

(For)5th-6th Grade English And Literature - Classic Illustrated and a newer series called Marvel Illustrated are a ideal for these grades and age groups, these titles can be used to enhance the story or novel that the student is reading, the issues can also bring the material more to life, also the issues can help those students that may be struggling in reading or comprehension by matching the words with illustrations. --Children's Book Guide Feb 16th 2009
