Review

Captain Scott's death with some of his team in the Antarctic is a memorable tale of the race to the South Pole. On the 100th anniversary of their deaths there has been renewed interest in the expedition and the Antarctic. According to this book the Antarctic is 'the coolest place on earth' where only penguins and present day research scientists live. Robert Falcon Scott is pictured in a photograph as a boy of 13. A great strength of this book is its use of some superb original photographs from the 1901 and 1911-12 expeditions, which show methods of travel, historic extreme weather clothing and life in the base hut. A fold out map in the inside back cover shows the 1911-12 route to the Pole with the food depots and the tragic events on the return journey marked. Scott's rival the Norwegian Roald Amundsen has only a brief mention! Large scale themes of environment, adventure and research are covered with enthusiasm and aplomb in concise language appropriate to interest primary school pupils of 7-9 years. (The publishers suggest 5-8). The authors have relied on the cooperation of the Cambridge Scott Polar Research for background information and the selection of illustrations. I recommend this book wholeheartedly for its high quality and attractive presentation. --Wendy Axford, School Librarian magazine Spring 2012

A colourful and surprisingly informative account of the life of the great explorer. Starting with his early life, we then learn about the Antarctic and the voyage to get there, then the final attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. The tragic story is vividly brought to life by the copious use of photographs, which really set the scene. The text is straightforward and yet emotional and this book is altogether an excellent introduction to the topic. --parentsintouch.co.uk website Nov 12
