Sooner rather than later most children encounter a counting book. To work, the genre has to be about more than escalating numbers ... In One Gorilla ... Browne's gorillas, orang-utans, chimpanzees etc. are gorgeous, with fur that glows orange, blue-black, whiskery white. Their expressions celebrate animal dignity. Paradoxically, this is also what makes them funny. Finally, there is a self-portrait of the author himself gazing back at us, with the words: "All Primates. All one family.
