De tous les écrivains qui ont traité le même genre, recherché les mêmes succès, il n'en est point certainement dont les noms forment un contraste aussi vif, une antithèse aussi nette que ceux de Molière et de Marivaux. Alors que tous les auteurs comiques, qui travaillèrent pour la scène après Molière, subissaient l'influence attractive du maître et traçaient leur orbite dans son rayonnement, Marivaux seul résistait à cette force latente, à cette loi de gravitation, et, au risque de se perdre, préférait chercher sa route à travers les espaces libres et ehcore inexplorés. Il ne cachait point l'antipathie invincible que lui inspirait Molière, il se refusait à reconnaître l'autorité du génie le plus créateur que la France ait: produit, et même, si l'on en croit d'alembert, il ne craignait pas, quand on le mettait à son aise sur cet article, d'avouer naïvement qu'il ne se croyait pas inférieur à ce grand peintre de la nature.
