Il ouvre mais au lieu de son frère il voit son ancienne pratique qui suivant son habitude, a le chapeau posé sur l'oreille; mais ce n'est plus un vieux feutre troué et déformé; depuis le dîner où Pierre a perdu son chapeau neuf, son intime ami en a probablement trouvé un qu'il a pris pour le sien quoiqu'il n'y eût aucune ressem blance. Malheureusement n'ayant pu se tromper pour d'autres - parties de ses vête mens M. Rossignol car c'est en effet lili même qui a' pris avec Pierre le nom de Loi seau a encore l'habit crasseux et le pantalon collant qu'il portait le jour où il se présenta chez M'. De Francornard mais pour cacher cette partie de son costume il a emprunté un vieux carick à un cocher de ses amis, et quoi qu'on soit au mois de juin, il s'en veloppe avec soin dedans enfin, pour se donner un air plus imposant, il a laissé pousser ses moustaches qu'il mouille à chaque minute en passant auparavant ses doigts sur ses lèvres.
Rossignol ignorait que Pierre fût mon frère, il ne l'avait appris que le jour du dîner. Tout en buvant, Pierre avait compté ses aventures: Mon nom celui de M. Der milly, avaient bientôt mis Rossignol au fait; se doutant qu'il serait fort mal reçu, il n'a vait point osé se présenter chez Pierre, garçon dont il regrettait de ne pouvoir tirer parti. Mais un jour, en rôdant au tour de la demeure de son intime ami, il apprend que M. Dermilly est mort, que Pierre habite seul un bel...appartement et que son frère André est parti sans que l'on sache de quel côté il a porté ses pas.
