Der erste Empfang auf persischem Boden war für uns kein freundlicher: Als wir von Bombay ankamen, wo die Pest wütete, mußten mein französischer Diener und ich dort fünf Tage in Quarantäne liegen, allein auf einer sumpfigen kleinen Insel; eine Barke brachte uns jeden Abend die nötigen Lebensmittel, die uns vor dem Hungertode schützen sollten. In einer Backofenhitze, inmitten der Qualen des heißen Sandes, den uns das benachbarte Arabien sandte, inmitten der rätselhaften Winde, mußten wir lange dort leiden. Tagsüber von der Sonne zu Boden gedrückt, mit Bremsen und giftigen Fliegen bedeckt, nachts die Beute ungezählten Unge ziefers, das das Gras verpestete.
