In a work of this general nature it is impossible to avoid error. All that can be expected of the Author is a diligent collection and faithful use of the best materials. To accomplish this we have/spared nei ther labour nor expense, yet none can be more sensible than we ourselves that some descriptions will be found defective and some statements erroneous. To the Heads of the various departments of the General Government, and to all the gentlemen who have Oblig ingly furnished us with information, we tender our sincere thanks. We shall be much obliged by any communications which will enable us to improve a future edition.
