The next act in the drama was the ap pointment by His Excellency of a Royal Commission on his own authority. It was issued to the Hon. C. D. Day, the Hon. Antoine Polette, and James Robert Gowan, three judges learned in the law. The com mission met, and on the opening of the ses sion in the following October its report was laid before Parliament. The contents are familiar to every reader of these pages, and do not form an attractive subject for ex tended comment. There could no longer be any doubt as to the course to be taken by the Premier. A few days afterwards Sir John Macdonald's Government resigned, and Mr. Mackenzie was called upon to form a new one. This he soon succeeded in doing, and on the 7th of November the new Ad ministration took ofiiee. As was abundantly proved at the ensuing elections, the new Government had the confidence of the country.
