Synopsis

Excerpt from The Life of Horace Benedict De Saussure

I have to thank several of my friends, and in particular Professor Bonney, Professor Garwood, and Dr. Mill, for their help with respect to the chapters devoted to de Saussure's scientific work and achievements. To the published works of the Rev. W. A. B. Coolidge and Dr. Diibi I have made frequent reference, and the latter has further aided me with his friendly advice. Mrs. Rathbone has kindly allowed me to reproduce the drawing of Mont Blanc made by Mr. E. T. Compton for her father, my old friend, the late C. E. Mathews.

Among the descendants of H. B. De Saussure and the members of old Genevese families who have been good enough to place at the disposal of my collaborator papers from their family archives.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Horace Benedict de Saussure, known to many as the father of both modern geology and Alpine exploration. Saussure's contributions to these fields in the latter half of the 18th century were not simply academic pursuits; they helped form our relationship with the natural world by fueling the sense of awe and wonder that draws us to climb mountains even today. Although men of science and literature had been exploring the Alps for almost a century before Saussure's birth, their interests lay more in the practical uses and botanical curiosities of the mountains. The author argues that it was the rise of various social and scientific movements of the time that created the conditions for the emergence of a figure such as Saussureâ"a man who combined the humanist outlook of the Renaissance with a passion for scientific observation. Saussure was among the first to approach his study of the Alps with a structured methodology, and the depth and breadth of his research is evidenced by the fact that his work on glaciers, rock formations, and weather patterns still influences our understanding of these phenomena. This book explores a range of Saussure's ideas and achievements, offering a comprehensive account of an extraordinary man whose explorations laid the groundwork for our enduring fascination with mountains.
