Mit dem Buche Burckhardts und Voigts hat das vorliegende nur wenige Tatsachen gemein. Burckhardt's Ansicht von der ‚entdeckung des Menschen' in der Renaissance teile ich nur, soweit sie der vollen Wahrheit entspricht: ich finde näm lich, dass der äussere Mensch zu einem guten Teil und der innere Mensch fast ganz schon früher entdeckt war und zu keiner Zeit völlig verschlossen bleiben konnte: haben ja gerade die tiefsten Seelen kenner, man denke z. B. An Dante oder an die berühmtesten Mystiker, im Mittelalter gelebt. Im vorliegenden Buche ist die Übersicht über die Kulturzustände, die auch ich auf. Grund eigenen Studiums berücksichtigen zu müssen glaubte, nur als Einfassung für die Schilderung der Menschen anzusehen. Ich war bestrebt, die Charaktere ohne jede Voreingenommenheit aus ihrem angeborenen Kern heraus zu erfassen, ohne falsche Begeisterung und doch mit Sympathie, die sich aber hinter die Darstellung zu verbergen sucht, um nicht jedem sofort aufzufallen.
