Excerpt from The Island of Roses and Her Eleven Sisters: Or the Dodecanese From the Earliest Time Down to the Present Day
But in view of the immense amount of details and data accumulated for the writing of this book it was necessary to condense it, otherwise it would have developed into a voluminous work.
In order to give my English readers the history of the Twelve Islands and the colour of their civilisation in a short but accurate form, I have thought it necessary to be briefer in some parts of the book than in others. For instance, leading events, such as the sieges of Rhodes, which have much bearing on its history and reveal the character of the people, have been made more prominent in these pages than have other less important matters. But those students who wish to go further into the sub ject will find fuller details and ampler information in the version of this book which I am now preparing in Greek.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the history of a remarkable group of islands in the Aegean Sea. The author carefully reconstructs the islands' past, drawing upon ancient texts, inscriptions, and coins to paint a vivid picture of their evolution from mythical beginnings to the dawn of the Roman Empire. We learn of the legendary founding of Rhodes, its three ancient cities, and the rise of the great city of Rhodes itself. The author then delves into the intricate political landscape of the region, exploring its interactions with powerful empires like Persia and Rome, its struggle for independence, and its eventual fate under the rule of the Knights of St. John. The book also explores the unique culture and traditions of these islands, their seafaring spirit, and their rich artistic heritage. This detailed and engaging account sheds light on the enduring influence of these islands on the course of Mediterranean history and the vibrant tapestry of Greek civilization.
