The method of the book is simple, consisting mainly in a careful study of nearly Three Hundred pieces of the Tudor period, which are contained in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, and which, although published some years back, are still practically unknown, and almost altogether neglected.
I have great pleasure in thanking Mr C. F. Bell of Oxford for kindly placing at my disposal the photographic plates from which the printed edition of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book was prepared.
