Auf dem Qatacrifiga, dem Orte seiner Geburt, und andern Höhen des Himavat verlebt Arjuna seine erste Jugend. Nach dem frühen Tode des Pändu bringen büssende Brahmanen die fünf Kinder nach Hastinäpura 1, 126, 9 4905, wo diese von Bhishma und Dhritarashtra freundlich aufgenommen werden. Mit seinen Brüdern und seinen Vettern, den hundert Söhnen des Dhritarashtra, w ird Arjuna in der Elephantenstadt erzogen. Sein Pflegvater ist Bhishma; dieser hat 5, 95, 38 3421 „die von ihrem Vater verlassenen Pandava gross gezogen. Seine Lehrer sind Kripa und Drona, auch des letzteren Sohn Acvatthäman nach l, 131, 51 5148, Während nach einer andern Stelle 1, 132, 17 5227 derselbe Acvatthäman, oh wohl von seinem Vater heimlich unterstützt, mit Arjuna ver geblich rivalisiert. Ehe Drona seinen Unterricht beginnt, Will er seinen Schülern das Versprechen abnehmen, ihm, wann sie ausgelernt hätten, zu geben, was er immer verlangen würde; aber nur Arjuna gibt dieses Versprechen 1, 132, 7 z 5217. In allen Waffenkünsten, aber besonders im Pfeilschiessen übertrifft Arjuna bald alle seine Mitschüler; er übt sich auch des Nachts bei Lampenschein, und als ihm auf Befehl des Drona die Lampe entzogen wird, lernt er im Dunkeln das Ziel treffen. Als Drona, dessen Liebling Arjuna bald ge worden ist, dies bemerkt, verspricht er ihm erfreut, er wolle ihn zum besten aller Bogenschützen auf der ganzen Erde machen. Dies gelingt ihm auch; späterhin ist Arjuna zwar in allen Kriegskünsten Meister, doch sind ihm Pfeil und Bogen immer die liebste Waffe.
