Synopsis

Excerpt from Poems on the Abolition of the Slave Trade

A surer star to guide the seaman's eye Than the pale glory of the northern sky; Alike ordain'd to shine, by night and day, Through calm and tempest, with unsetting ray; Where'er the mountains rise, the billows roll, Still with strong impulse turning to the pole, True as the sun is to the morning true, Though light as film, and trembling as the dew. Then man no longer crept With timid oars, And failing heart, along the sheltering shores; Broad to the Winds be spread his fearless sails, Defied the adverse, woo'd the favouring gales, Bared to the storm his adamantine breast, Or soft on ocean's lap lay down to rest; While free as clouds the liquid ether sweep, His white-wing'd vessels cours'd th' untravell'd deep; Boldly from clime to clime he lov'd to roam, The waves his heritage, the world his home. Then first Columbus, with the mighty hand Of grasping genius, weigh'd the sea and land; The floods o'erbalanc'd - Where the tide of light, Day after day, roll'd down the gulph of night, There seem'd one waste of watersz - long in vain His sp1r1t brooded o'er th' Atlantic main; When, sudden as creation burst from nought.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Emancipation, the abolition of slavery, and the fight to end the slave trade are discussed in this book. The author traces the historical roots of slavery and provides detailed accounts of individuals and groups that fought to abolish it. The book also delves into the arguments used by opponents to justify the practice and the challenges faced by those working to end it, exploring the complex social, political, and economic factors that contributed to the continuation of slavery. Readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of the struggles, sacrifices, and victories that shaped the fight for emancipation and abolition. The book sheds light on the horrors of the slave trade, exposing the cruelty and dehumanization that people of African descent were subjected to. It celebrates the resilience and courage of enslaved people who resisted their oppressors and the work of those who dedicated their lives to fighting for justice. Ultimately, the book highlights the power of collective action and the transformative impact that one person can have in shaping the course of history.
