Excerpt from The Shields of the Earth Belong Unto God: A Sermon Delivered in the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, Sunday, February 22, 1920
Abraham.* In the psalms written between these two we see how Israel nestled in the great metaphor. Down to the details of village life she stayed herself upon this assurance, Except the Lord keep the city the watchman watcheth but in vain. It is very beauti ful and touching to think of each little hamlet putting out its lights and going to sleep upon the serene assurance that the eternal God would act as watch man in her narrow streets.
