While the sheets of this Edition were passing through the Press, one who had paid a public tribute to the worth of these Discourses - my dear and venerable kinsman, Dr. John Brown of Edinburgh - passed away. I hoped to have been able to place a Oopy in his hands before he left us; but death has blighted the anticipation. In mat ters of opinion, Mr. Patterson did not, in every instance, thoroughly agree with Dr. Brown; and their minds were cast in somewhat different moulds. But they were knit together here by mutual affection and esteem; and who may doubt that they have met, as congenial Spirits, in a loftier land?
