Welt von Unwerth ist als außerordentlicher Professor der deutschen Sprache und Literatur zu Greifswald den 2 3. Januar 1 9 I 9 an der Grippe gestorben. Es war ihm nicht beschieden, die ihm anvertraute Darstellung der ältesten deutschen Literatur geschichte zu vollenden. So habe ich es unternommen, dieses Werk meines Schwiegersohnes, des teuren Freundes und Schülers zu Ende zu führen. Wie eng aber auch die wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen uns waren, verbot doch die Art der von dem Verstorbenen hinterlassenen Arbeit und der Umfang meiner Mitwirkung, von Unwerth als alleinigen Verfasser des Werkes zu nennen. So trägt es unser beider Namen; der Anteil eines jeden von uns läßt sich im einzelnen nicht bestimmen.
