This volume is devoted to the lives of three of the most eminent men whom England has at any time sent forth into the field of her most brilliant achieve ments: and the relation of their Voyages, Discover ies, and Adventures, is, to a certain extent, the his tory of her naval power and reputation. If the first aspiring thoughts of British youth are inseparably connected with maritime enterprise, - with the perils and vicissitudes, the novel and romantic incidents, the valour, daring, and heroic endurance, which are displayed in the narratives of the elder voyagers, - this work cannot want interest. From the very nature of the subject, it necessarily contains much curious and valuable instruction drawn from many sources, but in every instance verified by a careful examination of the original authorities.
