This rouses ste-beuve's indignation, and he appeals in reply to the brilliant character-sketches with which the Mémoires pour servir abound. Some of his earlier work is, no doubt, deficient both in finish and in descriptive power; even the present essay now and then furnishes an illustration of the maxim, tout ce qui n'est pas clair n'est pas français.
