Excerpt from The Life of Nelson

Robert southey was born at Bristol, England, on the 12th of August, 1774. He was the second son of Thomas Southey, a linen draper at Bristol, and his wife, for merly Miss Hill, daughter of an attorney at Bedminster. Southey's childhood was principally spent at Bath, in the house of a maiden aunt, who kept him very quiet during the day, and took him to the theater almost nightly. I had little propensity, he says, to any boyish sports, and less expertness in them. He read widely for a. Child, however. I went through Beaumont and Fletcher before I was eight years old. This was in addition to Shake speare. Before he was fourteen he had read translations of the Italian poets Tasso and Ariosto, Pope's Homer, Spenser's Fairy Queen, Sidney's Arcadia, and had saved enough of his pocket money to purchase the works of the Jewish historian Josephus.

Review:
- it provides a clear and concise account ... a fitting literary monument to Britain's greatest naval hero. -- Navy News, November 2001

.. no work will ever achieve the special status in the Nelson gallery as this book. -- Model Boats, October 1999

..Southey's work is not only a superb biography but a 'period piece' of Regency writing to set beside Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott. -- Contemporary Review, February 2000
Book Description:
Robert Southey, the poet and contemporary of Nelson, captures the essence of Nelson's personality and the spirit of the times, in what is widely regarded as the finest biography yet of Lord Admiral Nelson. Southey was thirty-one years old when the Battle of Trafalgar was fought and he breathed in all the heady atmosphere.
