A week in the tented grove! A week of Christian conversa tion, of earnest prayer, and of holy song! How many blissful memories of pure associations and spiritual triumphs linger with us after such a scene! Instruction, exhortation, experience, sup plication, and thanksgiving blend their powerful influences on the human heart, giving rise to purer emotions and higher resolutions. Nature seems to wear a more joyous aspect. The hill-tops are bathed in softer light, the variegated landscape has brighter hues, the streams murmur sweeter music, and all that hath breath seems to utter a song of praise.
We can scarcely wonder that in ancient times, even amidst the darkness of idolatry, the hill-tops and the groves were favorite places of religious worship. But, as from these summits the host of heaven was worshiped, or in the shade of the dense grove adoration was given to some idol, the Jews were commanded to break down the altars and to cut down the groves.
In Northern Europe the strange service of the Druids was held only in the recesses of the forest, apart from the abodes of men. Their priests were supposed, in such places, to pass their time in communion with supernatural powers.
