Fu adunque fisso doversi accogliere con ogni maniera di onori 1' Ospite sommo, e con deputazioni sino a Loreto ecclesiastiche e civili (i) e con luminarie, e con feste tanto dalla parte di terra, che da quella di mare. E siccome il nostro porto è uno de' monumenti più sontuosi della pontifiòia be neficenza, difeso a sinistra da chi lo mira dalla marina, da un nuovo braccio, e da una colossale lanterna, Opere del magnifico Pio VI così era da supporsi, che il S. Pa dre veder volesse questi grandiosi ricordi di un suo illustre antecessore. Era pertanto necessario aprirgli una via perchè vi si po tesse condurre, sendo l' antica orrida ed angusta; ed il gonfaloniere l' aprì, ordinan do uno squarcio nella piazza di S. Primia no che da più braccia fu con la massima speditezza eseguito. Venne quindi gittato un ponte, costrutta una barriera, e dell'una, e dell' altra parleremo più avanti.
