Mr. Baker was in New York for a while before Mr. Carnegie made his gift, and we saw Mr. Carnegie almost daily. When Mr. Carnegie intimated to us his decision, one of the things we all three rejoiced in was that now we could bring all the churches of Europe and America together for a conference on the Church and international goodwill. Mr. Carnegie made his gift on February l0th, and at the first meeting of the Executive Committee of the Union I asked for an appropriation of to bring about this - thing of which I had dreamed for years. If I remember rightly it was the first appropriation made by the Union.
