G. Sello, Be1trage zur Gesch1chte des Landes Wuhrden, Oldenburg 1891, S. 3 - 9.sich der sog. Friesischen \vede, des in der Hauptsache vom heutigen Amte Varel g'ebildeten Landstriches, zu bemächtigen. Bereits im Jahre 1386 hatten die Bewohner des Kirchspiels Varel in ihrem Bedürfnisse nach Schutz gegen die umwolmenden Häuptlinge die oldenburgische Herrschaft aus freien Stucken anerkannt; die Besitzergreifung wurde aber durch den Wider spruch und die Ansprüche der Häuptlinge von Jever und Gödens streitig gemacht. Erst als diese entsagt hatten, ging die 'wede nach dem Tode des Häuptlings Hayo von Varel den vermöge eines kurz zuvor abgeschlossenen Erbvertrages Graf Gerhard beerbte, in den Besitz des Grafenhauses über. Vollständig gesichert war derselbe jedoch nicht vor dem Jahre 1486, in welchem nach der Schlacht am Bokeler Holze dieserhalb eine Vereinigung mit dem Grafen von Ostfriesland zu Stande kam.
