Par quelle suite d'événements s'est dégagée l'idée de patrie, s'est formée et assise la notion de l'État? Par quelles influences plus intérieures et plus secrètes encore s'est étendue et diversifiée, derrière ces deux formes politiques, la notion de l'au-delà? Autant de problèmes non moins philosophiques qu'historiques qu'il faut d'abord résoudre si l'on veut entreprendre avec quelque maîtrise une étude politique sur les Etats-Unis. C'est donc avec raison que le livre a été intitulé Eléments d'une Psychologie politique du Peuple américain.
