This book, published in 1880, is a biography of Zenà n de Somodevilla y Bengoechea, the politician and statesman who became the Marquàs de la Ensenada in the mid-18th century. The author used original documents to gain a deeper insight into his personal and political life for this 125-page work, and was the first person to create a biography using these documents since Ensenada's death in 1762. As a minister, Ensenada took the reins of Spain's struggling finances and military during a period when the country was severely weakened after a long and bloody war of succession. Spain and France were aligned during this time, and consequently Ensenada's relationship with the French court and his country's European neighbors had a significant impact on his decision-making throughout his career. The author claims Ensenada was unfairly accused of ambition and intrigue, and aims to rehabilitate his image in this extensive biography.
