La révolution de juillet en 1830 consacrait la victoire de la bourgeoisie, l'avènement d'un nouveau roi, l'abolition de la pairie héréditaire et l'accès de la bourgeoisie au Parlement. Louis-philippe était le roi citoyen, le roi-bourgeois, qui avait juré d'observer la nouvelle constitution libérale et qui gagna une grande popularité par ses allures démocratiques: il se pro menait seul dans Paris, un parapluie sous le bras et entamait une conversation avec les passants. Son gouvernement prenait surtout à coeur les intérêts de la bourgeoisie riche qui accumula d'immenses richesses grâce à l'industrie naissante.
Le nouveau régime avait comme adversaires les Légitimistes, les Républicains et les Bonapartistes.
