Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed exploration of the writings of the 19th-century English philosopher and utilitarian theorist Jeremy Bentham. It sets his ideas in the context of the Enlightenment and the social and economic changes of his time. The author provides an overview of Bentham's concept of utilitarianism and its fundamental tenets. Key topics covered include his theory of pleasure and pain, the principle of utility as the foundation of morals, and the application of these principles to various spheres of human conduct. The book examines Bentham's distinction between self-interest and benevolence and discusses how he believed these could be reconciled. It also explores Bentham's ideas on punishment and social reform, as well as his influence on subsequent generations of thinkers. By delving into Bentham's complex and forward-thinking ideas, this book offers valuable insights into the history of utilitarianism and its enduring relevance to contemporary moral and political thought.
