Synopsis

Excerpt from The Analytical Theory of Heat Statement of the Object of the Work: Object of the theoretical researches; Different examples, ring, cube, sphere, infinite prism; the variable temperature at any point whatever is a function of the coordinates and of the time. The quantity of heat, which during unit of time crosses a given surface in the interior of the solid, is also a function of the time elapsed, and of quantities which determine the form and position of the surface. The object of the theory is to discover these functions; The three specific elements which must be observed, are the capacity, the conductibility proper or permeability, and the external conductibility or penetrability. The coefficients which express them may be regarded at first as constant numbers, independent of the temperatures; First statement of the problem of terrestrial temperatures; Conditions necessary to applications of the theory. Object of the experiments; The rays of heat which escape from the same point of a surface have not the same intensity. The intensity of each ray is proportional About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description

Translated by Alexander Freeman in 1878, with additional footnotes, 20 figures and an extensive bibliography, this book presents Fourier's theories of the mathematical laws governing the diffusion of heat in solids. Originally published in French in 1822, Fourier's work changed the way scientists perceived mathematical functions.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the science of heat, exploring its behavior and mathematical principles. Emerging centuries after groundbreaking works in mechanics and motion, it establishes a new domain of physics dedicated to understanding and quantifying heat phenomena. The author meticulously examines heat's fundamental properties, including its storage, transmission, and conduction through various materials. Through rigorous observation and experimentation, this book unveils the mathematical laws governing heat's movement and interaction with the environment. Beyond theoretical foundations, the text delves into practical applications, addressing topics like terrestrial temperatures, climate variations, and the impact of heat on the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. It further explores the intriguing realm of radiant heat, encompassing phenomena like reflection and the equilibrium of heat exchange between bodies and the vast expanse of space. Ultimately, this book illuminates the profound influence of heat on our planet and the universe, demonstrating how a seemingly complex and chaotic element adheres to elegant mathematical principles that shape the world around us.
